Description

Josef Casimir Hofmann ( January 20, 1876 – February 16, 1957 ) was a Polish-American virtuoso pianist, composer, music teacher, and inventor.   Josef Hofmann was born in Podgórze, near Kraków, the area of Poland then controlled by Austria-Hungary. He gave a debut recital in Warsaw at the age of 5.  Anton Rubinstein took Hofmann as his only private student in 1892 to 1984 and arranged the debut of his pupil in Hamburg, Germany. Hofmann toured and performed extensively over the next 50 years as one of the most celebrated pianist of the era.

10" Gramophone Concert Record GC-45532, single-sided: Chopin, Polonaise in A major op. 40 No 1, matrix 1711X, stamper 2, CO pressing, recorded in Berlin c.1903.


Condition: 2-3,traces of use and handling, very fine greying lines. One fine and short ( nearly invisible ) scratch along in the groove causes jump to next groove ( no repeat ), not very disturbing ! Otherwise plays very fine.

A good copy and a great rarity !

Grading:

1 = mint, never played on gramophone, is not used

1-2 = top copy, no traces of use - virtually as new

2 = excellent copy, few light non-sounding rubs/marks

2-3 = light traces of wear (rubs/marks), very light greying and/or light scratches, non sounding blemishes

3 = a good average copy with more noticeable rubs and marks; light greying, few light scratches possible

3-4 = more traces of use, sonic wear from light greying. An inferior average copy, light scratches possible

4 = some sounding wear, heavier rubs and marks, scratches possible

5 = obvious sounding wear, heavy rubs, marks, scratches. An unsatisfactory copy.
