Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were still a regional, East Coast phenomenon when they came to Los Angeles for a six-show residency at The Roxy Theatre. They performed six concerts over the four-day period from October 16-19, 1975.
It was the period when Springsteen still had his beard, and still resolved only to play small venues so as to never lose that close-knit atmosphere at his shows. (Within two years, both the beard and the resolution had been abandoned).
Their new album, Born to Run had been released to tremendous buzz several weeks earlier, and the week after the shows at The Roxy Springsteen would appear simultaneously on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines.
At the first performance at The Roxy, unbeknownst to Springsteen, his record label had reserved most of the seats for industry executives and celebrities. Bruce noted the unusually reserved audience reaction to the concert.
So at the next show the following day, he saw the seats filled with regular fans and their enthusiastic response, and observed "There Ain't Nobody Here From Billboard Tonight" - thus the title of this now-famous recording of the live radio broadcast by KWST FM.
Besides the great recording quality from this excellent stage of Springsteen's career, the Roxy show featured numerous memorable aspects, including the only known version of the band performing "Goin' Back" in honor of Carole King. "Thunder Road" is the slow version with Roy Bittan on piano and Springsteen on harmonica and vocals. He sings the opening of "Stagger Lee" as an introduction to "Spirit In The Night". "Rosalita" includes a snippet of the theme From "Shaft" in the midsection.
Considered one of the best quality recordings of Bruce Springsteen's pre-stardom period, the two-LP 'There Ain't Nobody Here From Billboard Tonight' (Hoffman Avenue Records) was one of the very first vinyl bootlegs, issued in late October 1975, just a few weeks after the show took place.
The owner of this album was a Springsteen fantatic from New Jersey who purchased two copies - one to play and one to save - for Christmas, 1975, soon after the multicolor vinyl bootlegs were pressed.
This is the saved copy: never played, mint-condition vinyl. In fact, the records themselves have never been removed from their original paper sleeves and the album package contents have only been removed for the purposes of taking these photos.
All creases and folds in the accompanying poster/cover were created in the original packaging of the bootleg. The album cover is discolored and has many abrasions (album cover had many blemishes when delivered) along with the original owner's writing to identify it as the new "N" copy.
